Leigh Jones Handal
Job title: Director of Advancement
Employed by: Preservation Society of Charleston
What I like most about my job: I love Charleston, truly, truly love it, and I love being in a position where I can work to preserve all those things about the city that make me love it so. And I love sharing all the special things about our city with others.
As Mentoring Chair, my goals are to: Help colleagues become the best advancement professionals they can become by connecting with others who have been to that rodeo before.
What I enjoy about serving on the board: Seeing what color socks Tom Walker is wearing.
I joined the Lowcountry Chapter of AFP because: Joy Simpson and Marc Edwards ran a tab.
I'm originally from: Cheraw, South Carolina, the Prettiest Town in Dixie, est. 1730. Population: 5,524, most of whom I am related to.
My hobbies include: All animal rescue, but I especially love rabbits. Christopher and I have rescued more than 100 bunnies since June 30, 1983.
Something my AFP colleagues might not know about me is: I’ve been married to the Best Guy Ever for almost 30 years (photo attached!) That, and I’ve been on John Travolta’s plane.
If I had one week to do anything I wanted, I would: Spend the week as a philanthropist, deciding how I wanted to donate a billion dollars to causes I believe in. And if there were time left over, I’d hang up the laundry – just to prove it can be done if you’re really committed enough to the concept.
